Forming a loop in a thin archwire without a fixed reference point on the plier beak is a common source of asymmetry on the adjustment tray. Without a locating feature, the clinician must judge wire placement on the cone purely by eye for every loop, which makes it difficult to reproduce the exact same diameter at a second site on the same wire, or to mirror a loop from the left side of the arch to the right.
