Rigid Gracey 13/14 Curette is selected for distal surfaces of posterior teeth carrying moderate to heavy calculus, where a standard-flex shank would bend before enough lateral pressure reaches the deposit.
The defining feature is a thicker, stronger shank than the standard 13/14, built on the same multi-angled shank and single 70-degree offset cutting edge, so the blade still slides past the distal contact and follows root curvature the same way a standard 13/14 would.
Clinically, the Rigid 13/14 is used for gross scaling, root debridement, and periodontal surgery on the distal surfaces of premolars and molars, almost always paired with the Rigid 11/12 so both mesial and distal surfaces can be completed in one appointment. Double-ended, medical-grade stainless steel, corrosion resistant, fully autoclavable.
