The Kramer-Nevins bone chisel 55 is a sharp, long single-ended instrument designed for the bone grafting stage of surgical treatment rather than for the bone shaving or tooth splitting roles filled by the Gardner, Chandler, or Wakefield series. It is used to compact the bony walls of a graft site after graft material has been placed, condensing the site to improve graft stability, and it also serves to remove exostosis and tori where a defined ridge of excess bone needs to be reduced.

At 5.5 mm blade width, the #55 is the narrower of the two Kramer-Nevins grafting instruments, making it suited to more confined graft sites and smaller exostosis or tori than the wider 7.5 mm #75. The long blade profile gives the clinician reach into deeper graft sites without requiring an unusually long handle stroke.
