The Mathieu Needle Holder is a spring-action suturing instrument that differs fundamentally from ring-handled needle holders. Its palm-grip, plier-style design means the clinician squeezes the handles to close the jaws and releases to open them – a faster and more fluid motion when placing multiple interrupted or continuous sutures intraorally. This is particularly advantageous in oral surgery, periodontal flap closure, and implant site suturing where speed and control both matter.
At 14 cm (5.5 inches) in overall length, this instrument balances reach and control for both anterior and posterior intraoral access. The jaws are cross-serrated to securely grip curved suture needles during tissue passage without the needle slipping or rotating, which can cause needle distortion and inaccurate suture placement.
The spring-loaded locking mechanism holds the needle in position between suture passes, allowing the clinician to reposition without re-grasping with a separate instrument. This one-hand operation is favoured by periodontists and oral surgeons who need the other hand free for tissue retraction or suture pulling.
Clinical Indications: Post-extraction socket closure, periodontal flap suturing, implant site closure, soft tissue surgical wound closure, and any intraoral suturing requiring controlled needle passage in moderate access areas.
Suture Compatibility: Works effectively with 3-0, 4-0, and 5-0 sutures on standard curved needles used in oral and periodontal surgery.
Material & Build: High-grade stainless steel construction with a corrosion-resistant finish. Autoclave-sterilizable at 134°C (273°F). Overall length: 14 cm / 5.5 inches. Jaw type: cross-serrated for needle grip security.
