It enters the interproximal embrasure from the buccal or lingual approach and makes a sweeping incision through the col tissue and attached PDL fibers at the base of the sulcus, completing the papilla excision that allows the flap to be reflected without tearing the tissue at the interdental attachment. The curved blade geometry follows the natural curve of the tooth surface, producing a smooth incision line rather than the stepped or ragged margin that results from using a straight blade in a curved access space.

Secondary uses include recontouring of fibrous gingival tissue in crown-lengthening procedures, cutting of residual tissue tags from the flap margin before suturing, and removal of interproximal granulation tissue in areas where a curette cannot create a clean incision.
