Ochsenbein 1 Periodontal Chisel, Single-Ended Tri-Bevel Bone Chisel for Osseous Recontouring

The Ochsenbein 1 periodontal chisel addresses one of the defining challenges of osseous surgery in the interproximal region: how to remove and recontour alveolar bone adjacent to the tooth at the crestal level without the instrument blade contacting the root surface, which would score the cementum and create iatrogenic root damage. The Ochsenbein pattern solves this with the semi-circular notch design — two concave indentations on the sides of the blade that are shaped to engage around the proximal surface of the tooth, positioning the cutting edge against the crestal bone and away from the root while providing a positive seating position against the tooth anatomy that stabilizes the instrument during the cutting stroke.

The tri-bevel cutting geometry provides three active edges in a single working end. The tip chisel edge removes bone at the crestal margin in a push stroke, the beveled notch edges trim the interdental col bone and the interproximal bone slopes simultaneously, and the semi-circular notch geometry prevents the blade from sliding apically onto the root surface under working pressure. This makes the Ochsenbein particularly effective for positive architecture recontouring — the procedure of reshaping the alveolar bone contour from reverse architecture (bone higher interdentally than at the radicular surface) to positive architecture that supports physiological gingival form after periodontal healing.

The Och-1 is used from the buccal approach, with the cutting edges on the convex face of the blade directed against the interproximal bone. For the same site from the lingual approach, or for the reverse-orientation access angle, the Och-2 is the companion instrument with its cutting edges on the concave face. Och-1 vs Och-2: Both carry 5 mm tri-bevel blades with semi-circular notches.
