The Olsen Hegar Needle Holder 15cm is designed for posterior intraoral suturing where instrument length is a practical necessity. In molar and third molar regions, the distance from the oral commissure to the surgical site is greater, and a shorter instrument forces the operator’s hand closer to the patient’s teeth and lips, limiting sight line and control. The 15 cm length positions the clinician’s hand comfortably outside the oral opening while still allowing the jaw tip to reach second and third molar sockets, retromolar tissue, and deep palatal suturing sites.
As with all Olsen Hegar instruments, the defining feature is the integrated suture scissors built into the shank. After the needle is passed through tissue and the suture knot is tied, the clinician simply shifts the instrument to engage the scissor blades and cuts the suture tails — all without releasing the instrument or reaching for a separate scissor. In posterior cases where access is already limited, eliminating instrument hand-offs is especially beneficial.
The cross-serrated jaws provide anti-slip needle grip on standard curved suture needles. The ratchet locking system secures the jaw at the appropriate tension, preventing needle rotation during tissue penetration. The ring handles follow the standard surgical grip format — comfortable for prolonged use during multi-suture procedures.
Clinical Indications: Posterior molar and third molar socket closure, retromolar flap suturing, palatal tissue suturing, posterior implant site closure, and any deep posterior procedure requiring a longer suturing instrument with integrated cutting capability.
Suture Compatibility: 2-0, 3-0, 4-0 curved needle sutures — heavier sutures more commonly used in posterior surgical closures.
Material & Build: High-grade stainless steel with a corrosion-resistant finish. Autoclave-compatible at 134°C (273°F). Overall length: 15 cm.
