Chandler bone chisel 7 is a 4.7 mm bi-bevel single-ended instrument designed for splitting and sectioning teeth during surgical extraction procedures. The bi-bevel tip carries beveled cutting edges on both faces of the blade, which distributes the splitting force symmetrically when the chisel is driven into the furcation or tooth body, creating a more controlled and symmetric split than a mono-bevel instrument that pushes the tooth predominantly in one direction. At 4.7 mm, the #7 is suited to molar furcation sectioning and to teeth where a narrower initial blade width is preferred before widening the split. Single-ended, mallet-compatible. The 7 Chandler Bone Chisel is a bi-bevel tooth-splitting instrument, belonging to the subgroup within the Chandler family that is designed for tooth sectioning rather than bone shaving. The distinction between the mono-bevel (#1, #2, #4) and bi-bevel (#7, #8) Chandler chisels is clinically significant: mono-bevel instruments are used against bone surfaces in a directional push stroke where the single angled face drives the blade in a specific direction; bi-bevel instruments are used against tooth structure in a splitting application where the symmetric beveled faces on both sides of the blade distribute the splitting force equally and drive the two halves of the tooth apart symmetrically.
In tooth extraction, particularly for mandibular molars fused at the furcation or with converging roots that prevent forceps delivery as a whole unit, the bi-bevel chisel is positioned at the furcation and driven apically with mallet strikes until the crown and roots begin to separate. The symmetric force distribution of the bi-bevel prevents the chisel from deflecting to one side as a mono-bevel would, which reduces the risk of inadvertent root fracture in an unintended direction. The 4.7 mm blade width fits the furcation width of most mandibular molars and provides enough blade surface area to stabilize the chisel in the furcation before the mallet stroke is applied.
