The serrated jaw pattern grips slippery or wet materials more securely, making this instrument particularly useful during intraoral procedures where standard smooth-tip forceps lose hold on moist gauze or dressing materials. The Adson Dressing Forceps Serrated occupies the functional middle ground between the smooth dressing forceps and the toothed tissue forceps in the Adson range. The cross-serrated tips provide noticeably more grip than smooth flat tips on wet, slippery, or compressible materials encountered in the intraoral environment — gauze soaked with blood or saline, haemostatic sponges, collagen materials, and periodontal dressings — without the sharp teeth that would puncture or tear soft tissue if the instrument inadvertently contacts the wound margin.
In practical clinical use, the difference between smooth and serrated tips becomes most apparent when working with moist materials in a wet field. Smooth tips can allow gauze or dressing material to slip under the gripping pressure required in the confined space of the oral cavity. Serrated tips create friction across the entire tip face, providing a more reliable hold with less pinching force — which in turn reduces hand fatigue during longer procedures involving multiple dressing changes or material placements.
