The Ochsenbein 2 periodontal chisel completes the Ochsenbein pair by providing the reverse blade orientation needed to access the interproximal bone from the approach direction where the Och-1 cannot effectively direct its cutting edges against the target surface. In osseous recontouring, the interproximal bone site is bounded on two sides by tooth roots and approached from both the buccal and lingual directions. The Och-1’s convex-face cutting edges are effective from one approach angle; rotating to the opposite approach angle reverses which face of the blade contacts the bone. The Och-2’s concave-face edges then become the active cutting surface for that same site from the opposite approach.
In practical use during a periodontal osseous surgery case, the surgeon selects between the Och-1 and Och-2 based on the approach angle to each specific interproximal site and the direction in which the working stroke moves relative to the blade curvature. Both instruments share the same semi-circular notch geometry that wraps around the proximal tooth surface, protecting the root from direct blade contact during the cutting stroke.
