The flat, parallel jaws hold the rectangular archwire in a consistent orientation during bending, which is essential for third-order (torque) adjustments. Torque is introduced by twisting the wire around its long axis, and any rotation or slippage of the wire within the jaw during the bending motion introduces an error in the planned torque value. The flat jaw surfaces grip the wire without allowing it to rotate, and the consistent jaw width produces a reproducible bend angle from one activation to the next.

First-order (in-out) and second-order (tip) bends follow the same principle: the slim profile allows precise placement at the intended archwire segment, and the jaw geometry produces the bend accurately without creating unintended secondary bends in adjacent sections of the wire.
