The 19 dental spoon excavator 2 mm occupies the large-blade end of the numbered excavator series, providing the fastest caries removal rate of the three blade sizes in this set by covering the largest preparation floor area per stroke. The 2.0 mm cutting arc contacts roughly 78% more surface area per sweep than the 1.5 mm #18 blade, which means significantly fewer strokes are needed to clear the same preparation of carious dentin when the preparation width allows the larger blade to be seated without wall-to-wall contact restricting its movement.
Large Class I MOD preparations in heavily carious permanent molars are the most common indication for the #19. In these preparations, the combined mesiodistal and buccolingual extent of the carious lesion may span the majority of the occlusal surface, with large volumes of soft dentin requiring removal before the preparation can be refined and restored. Starting the excavation with a 2.0 mm blade removes this bulk volume rapidly, after which the #18 or #17 can be used to address any residual carious dentin in the narrower extensions of the preparation or near the pulp horns where the larger blade cannot be safely used.
Pediatric stainless steel crown preparations are another primary indication. In primary molars with extensive caries, the pulp chamber is proportionally large relative to the crown dimensions but the caries volume is also large, and the 2.0 mm blade clears the decayed material efficiently. The technique remains a lateral sweeping motion directed against the softened dentin. The 2.0 mm blade should not be used in preparations where the cavity width at the floor does not comfortably accommodate the full blade diameter – in those situations the blade would apply force laterally against both walls simultaneously, removing preparation geometry rather than carious tissue. Double-ended with mirror-image 2.0 mm spoons. Medical-grade stainless steel, corrosion resistant, autoclavable.
Product Features
- 19 dental spoon excavator 2 mm largest-blade instrument in the numbered series for the fastest caries removal rate in large preparations
- 2.0 mm blade covers approximately 78% more preparation floor area per stroke than the 1.5 mm #18
- Primary indication for large Class I MOD posterior preparations and pediatric stainless steel crown preps
- Use for initial bulk excavation then step down to #18 or #17 for narrower extensions and pulp-proximate zones
- Double-ended mirror-image 2.0 mm spoons for bilateral preparation access from one instrument
- Medical-grade stainless steel, corrosion resistant, fully autoclavable; maintain blade sharpness for accurate tissue discrimination
19 vs 17 and 18: The largest blade in the numbered series at 2.0 mm. Suited to large MOD preparations, pediatric stainless steel crown preps, and any cavity where the preparation dimensions accommodate the wider blade and bulk removal efficiency is the priority over fine control.
