The 9 Miller surgical curette provides a practical solution to a common intraoperative challenge: the socket or defect being debrided is not uniform in width from the entrance to the apex. Many extraction sockets, particularly those of conical-rooted teeth or teeth with flaring coronal roots, are wider at the entrance level and taper toward the apical area. Using a single-size spoon sized for the narrower apical dimension means the wider coronal walls are underworked per stroke; using one sized for the coronal width risks the spoon rim contacting the lateral walls before reaching the apex.
The #9’s dual-size design addresses this directly. The 3.4 mm end is used first for the upper and mid-socket walls where the socket dimensions accommodate it freely. The clinician then rotates the instrument 180 degrees and uses the 2.8 mm end to access the narrower apical third, where the smaller spoon fits without resistance and can contact the apical base cleanly. Two debridement widths covered by a single instrument, without a tray change or second instrument pick-up.
