Rather than removing the archwire to trim or adjust it on the bench, the plier lets the clinician form the tip-back bend directly in the mouth, saving a chair step and avoiding the need to re-seat and re-ligate the wire afterward.

The jaw design pairs a serrated gripping face with a flat opposing surface, so the plier holds the archwire securely at the point of the bend rather than letting it slip, which matters specifically with nickel-titanium wire because of its superelastic, shape-memory properties. NiTi resists permanent deformation more than stainless steel archwire, so the plier is rated to bend NiTi up to 0.64 mm (.025 in) reliably without the jaw losing its grip mid-bend.
