Rigid Gracey 7/8 Curette is selected for the facial and lingual surfaces of posterior teeth when calculus is moderate to heavy and a standard-flex shank would bend before transmitting enough pressure to the deposit.

The defining feature is a thicker, stronger shank than the standard 7/8, while the single 70-degree offset cutting edge and blade curvature stay unchanged, so adaptation to molar and premolar facial and lingual anatomy is identical to the standard version.

Clinically, the Rigid 7/8 is used for gross calculus removal, root debridement, and periodontal surgery on posterior facial and lingual surfaces, typically stocked alongside the Rigid 11/12 and 13/14 for full posterior coverage.
