14 Dental Spoon Excavator 1.5 mm, Double-Ended Caries Removal Instrument

CAD 49.99

SKU: RX114

The 14 dental spoon excavator is a double-ended 1.5 mm spoon instrument from the standard numbered excavator series, used for caries removal, soft dentin excavation, and cavity preparation across routine restorative procedures. The 1.5 mm blade diameter is the most commonly used size in general restorative dentistry, covering the majority of Class I, Class II, and Class V cavity preparations that fall within the moderate size range. Both ends carry 1.5 mm mirror-image spoons for bilateral preparation access from a single instrument. Medical-grade stainless steel, autoclavable.

SKU:RX114

The 14 dental spoon excavator is a member of the standard numbered excavator series, carrying a 1.5 mm double-ended spoon configuration suited to general restorative caries removal. At 1.5 mm, this blade diameter is the workhorse size in restorative dentistry: wide enough to remove a meaningful amount of carious dentin per stroke and cover preparation floor surfaces efficiently, and narrow enough to fit within the majority of standard cavity preparations without contacting the preparation walls on both sides simultaneously – a condition that would cause uncontrolled lateral force and risk engaging sound dentin beyond the intended excavation boundary.

The numbered series excavators differ from the E-series in their shank geometry. While the E1 and E2 share a defined [12-9-15] and [15-9-15] formula respectively, the numbered series instruments use varied angulation patterns across the range, with each number representing a specific shank configuration designed for particular access conditions. The #14 shank configuration provides a specific blade offset that suits certain preparation access angles and tooth positions that the #17 and #18 instruments, which also carry 1.5 mm blades in the case of the #18, may access from a different geometric approach.

Clinical technique with the spoon excavator follows the same principles across all sizes: apply the cutting edge to the softened carious dentin and draw the instrument in a lateral sweeping motion, using the curvature of the spoon to lift and remove the softened material. Sound dentin resists the lateral force of the spoon; carious dentin does not. This differential hardness is the primary tactile guide for knowing when excavation is complete. Double-ended configuration, medical-grade stainless steel, autoclavable.

Product Features

  • 14 dental spoon excavator 1.5 mm double-ended spoon for caries removal across routine Class I, II, and V restorative preparations
  • 1.5 mm blade is the standard restorative tray size – wide enough for efficient caries removal, narrow enough for controlled preparation access
  • Numbered series shank geometry provides a specific blade offset and access angle distinct from the E-series excavators
  • Double-ended mirror-image spoons for bilateral preparation wall access from one instrument
  • Differential hardness between carious and sound dentin provides tactile feedback for excavation endpoint
  • Medical-grade stainless steel, corrosion resistant, fully autoclavable

14 vs 18 (both 1.5 mm): Both instruments carry 1.5 mm blades but differ in shank geometry. The #14 has a distinct angulation pattern from the #18. Verify your physical stock’s shank angle against the #18 to document the correct clinical access difference for each on the product page.
