16 Cowhorn Forceps is built around two sharply pointed, curved beaks that meet at the tip in the shape the pattern is named for, designed to seek out and engage the furcation of an intact mandibular molar.
Rather than gripping the crown from the buccal and lingual sides the way a universal forceps does, the cowhorn beaks seat directly into the furcation between the roots. Closing the handles wedges the roots apart, luxating the tooth with a splitting action that is often more effective on a solid molar than a straight pulling force. This makes beak placement the critical step: the furcation needs to be intact and accessible for the pattern to seat correctly.
Clinically, it is selected specifically for mandibular molar extractions where the tooth is otherwise sound and the furcation has not been compromised by decay or a prior fracture. Deeply serrated handles maintain grip under the firm pressure a splitting extraction requires. Manufactured from medical-grade stainless steel, corrosion resistant, fully autoclavable.
