Kelly-Rankin hemostat curved instruments occupy the step between the standard Kelly hemostat and the heavy-duty Rochester-Pean pattern. The extended length addresses a specific access challenge: in deeper surgical sites, particularly around impacted lower third molars, distal implant placement sites, and subperiosteal procedures in the posterior mandible, a 5″ hemostat leaves the clinician’s ring grip so close to the patient’s lip line that the hand itself obscures the visual field. The additional 1.25″ of shank length in the Rankin places the ring grip further posterior, opening the anterior field of view and making it easier to see the instrument tips and the tissue around them during the working stroke.
The jaw design retains all Kelly characteristics: half-serrations on the distal portion of the jaw for firm grip without excessive proximal soft tissue trauma, and smooth metal on the jaw base to reduce collateral contact damage. The curved jaw configuration allows the working tips to be directed toward the target while the shank and grip remain in a comfortable anterior position, the same ergonomic advantage of the standard curved Kelly but extended further by the additional shank length.
The Kelly-Rankin is a standard instrument in oral surgery and implant dentistry setups where routine posterior access frequently requires more reach than the 5″ pattern provides. Matching the straight and curved Rankin variants on one tray covers both direct and angled approaches within the posterior arch. Medical-grade stainless steel, corrosion resistant, autoclavable at standard steam sterilization parameters.
