Mini Friedman Bone Rongeur Slightly Curved, 1.3 mm Jaw Microsurgical Bone Rongeur

CAD 189.99

SKU: BR122

The mini Friedman bone rongeur is a 5.5″ (14 cm) end-cutting microsurgical rongeur with 1.3 mm wide jaws and a 15° slight curve, designed for precise bone removal in confined surgical sites where the 2.4 mm jaw of the standard Friedman cannot be positioned without contacting adjacent structures. The very fine 1.3 mm jaws enter narrow osseous access zones at implant sites, periapical windows, and periodontal osseous defects, removing bone in small controlled bites without disturbing the surrounding cortical walls, root surfaces, or soft tissue margins. The 15° slight curve improves visual access to the cutting tips during the working stroke compared to a fully straight jaw. Spring-return handle, medical-grade stainless steel, autoclavable. For bone only – never for root removal.

The mini Friedman bone rongeur occupies a specific and important role in the dental surgical instrument set: it handles bone removal tasks in sites where the bone access window is too narrow for a standard rongeur jaw, where the adjacent structures are too close to risk contact with a wider instrument, and where the amount of bone being removed per bite needs to be small enough to allow precise incremental control. This positions the instrument primarily in three clinical areas: periodontal osseous surgery, implant site preparation, and periapical microsurgery.

In periodontal osseous surgery, infrabony defects, furcation lesions, and irregular alveolar contours frequently require bone removal in areas bounded on two or more sides by root surfaces and residual alveolar bone. A jaw width of 2.4 mm at these sites risks contacting the root surface or the adjacent interdental bone wall on the swing of each bite, creating unintended damage to structures that need to be preserved for the procedure’s clinical outcome. The 1.3 mm jaw enters the defect with enough clearance to bite only the intended bone target, leaving adjacent roots and bone walls uncontacted.

In implant site preparation, fenestration defects and dehiscences in the buccal cortical plate sometimes require selective bone removal to allow graft material placement or membrane adaptation. The micro Friedman’s 1.3 mm jaw removes small sections of the fenestrated bone plate or the sharp cortical margin without engaging the adjacent implant surface or the intact bone on either side of the defect. In periapical microsurgery, the bone crypt over the root apex is typically 5 to 8 mm in diameter, and bone removal at the margins of this crypt needs to be precise and conservative. The 1.3 mm jaw allows the surgeon to enlarge or refine the crypt margin incrementally under magnification without taking an oversized bite that would exceed the intended margin.

The 15° slight curve on this version provides a visual advantage over a fully straight jaw in confined intraoral access. The slight angulation shifts the jaw tip slightly out of the direct axis of the instrument body, giving the clinician a cleaner line of sight to the cutting contact point without the instrument shank blocking the view. This is less angular than a 90° curved version, which is the correct choice when a nearly perpendicular approach to the bone surface is needed. The 15° version is the practical everyday option for most periodontal and implant microsurgical applications.

The spring-return handle automatically reopens the jaws after each bite, maintaining the working rhythm. The jaw tips are very delicate at 1.3 mm and will fracture if used on hard root material, calcified deposits, or dense cortical bone beyond their design capacity. Bone removal should be performed in small, controlled increments. Medical-grade stainless steel, corrosion resistant, autoclavable at standard steam sterilization parameters, compatible with ultrasonic cleaning prior to sterilization.

Product Features

  • Mini Friedman bone rongeur 1.3 mm jaw width enters confined osseous access sites where a standard 2.4 mm rongeur jaw would contact adjacent roots, bone walls, or implant surfaces
  • 15° slight curve improves visual access to the cutting tip during the working stroke without the sharp redirection of a 90° curved jaw
  • Suited to periodontal osseous surgery, implant site fenestration management, and periapical microsurgical bone removal under magnification
  • End-cutting jaw design takes controlled bone bites directly at the target margin without side contact on adjacent structures
  • Spring-return handle reopens jaws automatically after each bite for a consistent, efficient working rhythm
  • Very delicate 1.3 mm jaws – for soft cancellous and cortical bone only; root contact or misuse will fracture the jaw tips
  • 5.5″ (14 cm) overall length; medical-grade stainless steel, corrosion resistant, fully autoclavable
  • Compatible with ultrasonic cleaning prior to steam sterilization
