Tapered Osteotome, Convex Tip, Straight, 4.2mm is used during implant site preparation to widen and condense a narrow ridge through bone-spreading technique rather than removing bone with a rotary drill.
The convex, rounded tip displaces trabecular bone laterally and apically as it advances, compacting it against the walls of the osteotomy. This increases bone density immediately adjacent to the future implant site and helps preserve buccal and lingual plate width, which is particularly useful in narrow ridges and softer Type III/IV bone where a purely drilled site can leave inadequate primary stability.
At 4.2mm, this is the second-largest diameter in the tapered convex-tip range, generally used at the matching point of a step-up sequence that begins with a pilot hole and progresses through increasing diameters. The straight shaft keeps the handle in-line with the tip for direct control, suited to anterior sites and posterior sites with sufficient straight-line access. Depth markings at 7, 10, 13, 15, and 18mm allow the clinician to confirm insertion depth visually throughout the procedure, without stopping to recheck with a probe or film.
This convex, condensing tip geometry is generally chosen for the early-to-mid stages of a bone-spreading sequence, where the priority is expanding and compacting the ridge rather than elevating a membrane or carrying graft material. Periodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and general dentists placing their own implants use it across single-tooth and short-span edentulous sites where preserving ridge width is as important as achieving primary implant stability. Manufactured from surgical-grade stainless steel, corrosion resistant, fully autoclavable.
