Tweed Loop Forming Pliers

CAD 179.99

SKU: RT167

Tweed loop forming pliers are specifically built for the Tweed technique and for any application requiring accurate offsets and clean 90-degree bends in rectangular archwires. The beveled jaw edges are the key design feature: they allow the jaws to form a true right-angle bend at a precise position on the wire without crushing or deforming the wire cross-section adjacent to the bend point. The jaws handle round and rectangular wires up to .022″ x .028″ (.56 mm x .71 mm). The instrument is used to form loop mechanics, closing loops, torquing auxiliaries, and step bends where square corners rather than rounded curves are required. Medical-grade stainless steel, fully autoclavable.

Tweed loop forming pliers take their name from the Tweed-Merrifield edgewise technique, a treatment philosophy built around highly controlled archwire bending in which loops, stops, and angular bends are formed with accuracy and repeatability at defined positions along the archwire. The defining characteristic of this instrument is its beveled jaw design. The bevel allows the jaw edge to seat close to the bend point without the bulk of the jaw body preventing a clean 90-degree deflection, so the wire turns at a true right angle rather than a broad curve.

This 90-degree capability is the functional distinction between Tweed loop forming pliers and general loop-forming instruments. Most bending pliers produce curves, not corners, because the jaw geometry rounds the wire over a short arc at the contact point. The Tweed plier’s beveled edge places the bend at a sharper angle, producing the square corners needed for Tweed-style closing loops, vertical loops, and gable bends that form the mechanical basis of the technique.

Outside of Tweed mechanics, these pliers are useful for any clinician who needs accurate 90-degree corners in rectangular or round wire, including forming omega stops, fabricating utility arches, and making rectangular auxiliary springs. Wire capacity reaches .022″ x .028″ (.56 mm x .71 mm), one size larger than the standard .025″ width, which allows these pliers to be used with heavier wire gauges where the Tweed technique typically works. Medical-grade stainless steel, corrosion resistant, autoclavable at standard steam sterilization parameters.
