Gracey 1/2 Curette is selected when subgingival calculus or root roughness is isolated to anterior teeth and a clinician wants a blade shaped specifically for that surface rather than a universal curette’s broader adaptation.
The defining feature is the single cutting edge offset at 70 degrees to the lower shank, which lets the blade follow the curvature of an incisor or cuspid root closely while the non-cutting side of the blade protects the gingival tissue from accidental trauma.
Clinically, the 1/2 is used for subgingival scaling and root planing on the facial, lingual, mesial, and distal surfaces of anterior teeth, and is commonly the first instrument stocked in a Gracey set for hygiene appointments. Double-ended, medical-grade stainless steel, corrosion resistant, fully autoclavable.
