The 15 Chandler Bone Chisel, mono-bevel single-ended for jaw bone ridge widening during implant site preparation. Prevents over-cutting bony structure. Autoclavable stainless steel. is the highest-numbered instrument in this Chandler set, and like the #13, it extends the Chandler series approach coverage for bone preparation in implant and alveolar surgical sites. The #15 is specifically documented for jaw bone ridge widening – the procedure of progressively expanding a narrow alveolar crest to create sufficient width for implant placement without requiring a separate bone graft. In ridge widening, the chisel is introduced into the crestal bone after an initial osteotomy and driven incrementally to spread the buccal and lingual cortical plates apart, increasing the ridge width at the implant site through plastic deformation of the cancellous bone between the plates.
The knurled handle provides tactile control during ridge widening, where the feel of bone deformation through the handle grip is an important indicator of progress. Preventing over-cutting – going too far with the chisel such that one cortical plate fractures rather than bends – is the primary risk in ridge widening, and the tactile feedback through a knurled handle is meaningfully better than through a smooth surface. Mallet-compatible, medical-grade stainless steel, autoclavable.
