The 85 Lucas surgical curette fills the gap between the finest #84 spoon and the medium #86 in the Lucas series. The 2.5 mm blade is wider than the #84’s 2 mm edge, which means more of the socket wall tissue is contacted and removed per stroke. This is the correct size selection when the socket mesiodistal width at the working depth is wide enough to accommodate the 2.5 mm spoon without restriction but not wide enough for the 2.8 mm #86 spoon to enter and rotate freely. Common applications at this size include maxillary lateral incisors, upper and lower canines, and the narrower single-rooted premolars encountered in the mandibular arch.
The instrument is double-ended with mirror-image right and left spoons on opposite ends of the handle. The 50° terminal shank angle provides access to the apical and lateral socket walls from a comfortable working approach. The elongated spoon radius allows the working edge to conform to the curved socket wall surface as the instrument is swept through the debridement stroke, providing wall contact across a broader arc than a flat-edged scraping instrument would achieve. Clinical applications are consistent across all Lucas instruments: granulation tissue removal, debridement of infectious material following extraction of infected teeth, cyst cavity curettage, and socket preparation before allograft placement or membrane coverage in site preservation procedures.
