Barnhart 5/6 Curette is selected for posterior scaling appointments where a clinician needs a universal instrument with enough shank length to reach into deep periodontal pockets on molars and premolars.

The defining feature is a thinner, longer terminal shank than a standard universal curette, paired with two cutting edges per end so both mesial and distal surfaces of a posterior tooth can be scaled without switching instruments.

Clinically, the 5/6 is used for supragingival and subgingival scaling and root planing on premolars and molars, particularly where pocket depth makes a shorter-shanked universal curette difficult to seat correctly.
