The Double-Bladed Scalpel Handle #5 is a purpose-built periodontal surgical instrument designed for one specific task: harvesting a palatal connective tissue graft of uniform 1mm thickness in a single incision stroke. The handle holds two parallel blades simultaneously, with a fixed 1mm spacer between them, so both cuts are made in the same pass – producing a graft slab of consistent depth without the need for multiple free-hand incisions.
This instrument is used primarily in subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) procedures for root coverage, where graft thickness directly affects the clinical outcome. Grafts that are too thin tend to resorb; grafts that are too thick are harder to adapt and may compromise flap closure. The 1mm inter-blade distance targets the clinically recommended graft thickness for most root coverage indications.
By standardizing the palatal harvest depth, the double-blade design reduces technique sensitivity, shortens operating time at the donor site, and minimizes unnecessary trauma to the palatal tissue. It is an essential instrument for periodontists and oral surgeons performing mucogingival surgery, soft tissue augmentation, or guided tissue regeneration (GTR) procedures that require autogenous connective tissue. The handle is machined from stainless steel, fully autoclave compatible, and accepts standard surgical blades.
