The SurgiWorld LaGrange Scissors Black are a purpose-built variant of the classic LaGrange scissor design, engineered for dental professionals who work under magnification, surgical microscopes, or high-intensity operatory lighting where instrument glare is a real clinical concern.
The instrument carries the same core geometry as the silver version – an S-curved (double-angled) blade that offsets the blade tips from the handle, keeping the operator’s hand and wrist outside the surgical field while the tips access deep intraoral sites with full control and visibility. At 11.5 cm (4.53″), the length provides comfortable reach to posterior quadrants, floor-of-mouth sites, and deep flap margins.
What separates the black variant is the black oxide or titanium nitride (TiN) surface coating applied to the instrument body. This coating creates a non-reflective, matte black surface that absorbs light rather than scattering it – dramatically reducing the glare and visual interference caused by bright operatory lights or microscope illumination bouncing off a polished stainless steel surface. For clinicians using surgical loupes at 3.5x–5x magnification or a surgical microscope during endodontic microsurgery, periodontal microsurgery, or implant microsurgical techniques, this is a meaningful functional advantage.
The black finish also provides a high visual contrast against light-coloured tissues – making the instrument position easier to track in the surgical field, particularly during photography or video documentation of procedures where the instrument needs to be clearly distinguishable from the surrounding anatomy.
Clinically, the black LaGrange scissors are used for the same range of procedures as the silver version: suture removal, soft tissue trimming, periodontal flap surgery, gingivectomy, membrane trimming, and tissue dissection. The sharp/sharp tip configuration allows precise, tear-free entry into tissue planes.
The underlying stainless steel body remains fully autoclavable at 134°C, and the black coating is designed to withstand repeated sterilization cycles without peeling, flaking, or loss of adhesion. Ring handles accommodate gloved hands for both left- and right-handed clinicians.
