The Mayo Hegar Needle Holder 15cm Tungsten Carbide is the longer, posterior-reach version of the Mayo Hegar series. At 15 cm (6 inches), it extends the clinician’s working reach comfortably into the posterior quadrants of both arches – areas where shorter instruments force the wrist into an awkward angle or require the elbow to be raised unnaturally. For oral surgeons performing third molar site closures, posterior implant suturing, or palatal flap closure, this length is the practical standard.
The Tungsten Carbide jaw inserts feature a cross-hatched diamond-pattern surface that bites firmly into the body of curved suture needles. Because TC is harder than stainless steel, significantly less closing force is needed to hold the needle securely – reducing hand fatigue during long surgical cases with multiple sutures. The TC jaw surface also wears far more slowly than a plain stainless steel jaw, maintaining consistent grip performance over the long term and reducing how often the instrument needs to be replaced or re-tipped.
The box-lock joint keeps the upper and lower jaws in precise alignment under repeated opening and closing stress – a critical feature that determines how straight the needle tracks through tissue. Misaligned jaws cause needle wobble, which results in imprecise suture placement and potential tissue tearing.
TC Handle Identification: Gold-coloured handle rings identify the Tungsten Carbide version at a glance, distinguishing it from standard SS instruments in a mixed tray setup.
Clinical Indications: Posterior molar and third molar site closure, palatal suturing, posterior implant site suturing, deep retromolar pad closure, and any intraoral procedure requiring extended reach with a high-grip suturing clamp.
Suture Compatibility: 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, and 5-0 curved needle sutures.
Material & Build: Stainless steel body with Tungsten Carbide jaw inserts. Autoclave-compatible at 134°C (273°F). Overall length: 15 cm / 6 inches
