The Olsen Hegar Needle Holder 14cm is the most commonly selected size in the Olsen Hegar range due to its versatility across a broad range of intraoral suturing locations. The 14 cm length gives the operator sufficient reach to comfortably access first premolar extraction sites and canine regions in both arches without the handle of the instrument resting heavily against the patient’s lips or cheeks – a common issue with longer instruments in moderate-sized oral cavities.
The key advantage of the Olsen Hegar design remains its built-in suture scissors. Positioned on the instrument shank just behind the needle-gripping jaw, the scissor blades allow the clinician to place a suture, pass the needle, then shift the instrument slightly proximally to cut the suture tail – all with the same instrument, without releasing it from the hand. In procedures with four to eight interrupted sutures, this can save two to three minutes per case and reduces the number of instruments needed on the surgical tray.
The cross-serrated jaw surface provides a firm and consistent grip on standard curved needles. The ratchet locking system locks the jaw closed at the appropriate tension for the needle being used, preventing the needle from slipping or rotating during tissue passage. The ring handles accommodate the standard thumb-and-ring-finger surgical grip, with the index finger extended along the shank for directional control.
Clinical Indications: Anterior-to-premolar zone suturing in both arches, post-extraction socket closure, flap suturing after crown lengthening or implant placement, soft tissue biopsy closure, and routine dental surgical wound closure where procedural efficiency matters.
Suture Compatibility: 3-0, 4-0, 5-0 curved needle sutures.
Material & Build: High-grade stainless steel with a corrosion-resistant finish. Autoclave-compatible at 134°C (273°F). Overall length: 14 cm.
