The 86 Lucas surgical curette occupies the middle of the Lucas size range and is typically the instrument most frequently used in a general dental surgical tray setup. At 2.8 mm, the spoon width covers the majority of premolar socket dimensions at all root depths without restriction, making it the default size selection for most premolar extractions without the need to first assess whether a smaller or larger spoon is required at the working depth.
For molar extractions, the #86 is the appropriate choice when the roots have been sectioned and each socket is being debrided individually. The mesiobuccal and distobuccal root sockets of an upper first molar, and the mesial and distal root sockets of a lower first molar after sectioning, are typically in the 2.5 to 3.5 mm mesiodistal width range at the apical third. The 2.8 mm spoon enters these sectioned root sockets without restriction in most cases, curettages the apical and lateral walls, and removes granulation tissue and periapical pathology efficiently. For the larger unsectioned molar socket, the #87 or #88 spoon provides more appropriate blade coverage. Overall length 6.5″ (16.5 cm). Medical-grade stainless steel, corrosion resistant, autoclavable.
