The Mayo Hegar Needle Holder is one of the most widely used suturing clamps in oral surgery and dental practice. Its ring-handle, box-lock design follows a traditional surgical format that most clinicians are trained on, and the addition of Tungsten Carbide (TC) jaw inserts elevates its performance significantly over standard stainless steel versions.
Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials used in surgical instruments. The TC jaw insert features a cross-hatched diamond pattern that bites into the suture needle body with far less grip force compared to plain stainless steel serrations. This means the needle is held more securely, reduces needle rotation during tissue passage, and the jaws maintain their grip texture many times longer than non-TC alternatives – making this instrument a better long-term value for high-volume suturing practices.
The 13 cm (5 inch) length is the shorter version in the Mayo Hegar range, suited for anterior suturing – incisor and canine extraction sockets, anterior implant sites, frenectomy closures, and labial soft tissue procedures where a shorter instrument length means less handle crowding in the limited oral opening.
The ratchet lock provides stable, multi-position needle fixation between tissue passes. The index finger rests along the shank for directional control during needle driving. The ring handles accommodate standard thumb-and-ring-finger grip.
TC Jaw Identification: Instruments with tungsten carbide inserts are typically identified by gold-coloured rings on the handles – a widely used colour coding standard in surgical instruments.
Clinical Indications: Anterior intraoral suturing, frenectomy closure, biopsy site closure, anterior implant site suturing, and any procedure requiring a compact suturing instrument with high-performance jaw grip.
Material & Build: Stainless steel body with Tungsten Carbide jaw inserts. Autoclave-compatible at 134°C (273°F). Overall length: 13 cm / 5 inches.
