After seating an archwire through the brackets and engaging the last molar buccal tube, the distal excess wire extending beyond the tube must be cut. The trimmed segment, even a short tail of 1–3 mm, is a sharp metal piece that will irritate buccal mucosa if left long, or become a loose foreign body in the mouth if the cutter does not retain it after severing. Standard wire cutters that simply cut and release require the operator to immediately retrieve the trimmed piece from the oral cavity before the patient closes, a step that is easy to miss in a busy adjustment sequence.
The Universal Cut and Hold Distal End Cutter eliminates this retrieval step. The instrument incorporates a working-end retention mechanism, a silicone or mechanical grip within the tip, that holds the cut segment after the blades pass through the wire, keeping the trimmed piece captured until the instrument is withdrawn from the mouth and the tip is cleared over a bracket tray. This is the safety function that makes this design the standard distal end cutter in modern orthodontic practice rather than a conventional wire cutter.
Wire compatibility covers the full range from .012″ (.30 mm) round pins up to .021″ × .025″ (.53 mm × .64 mm) rectangular stainless steel, all round and rectangular archwire sizes used from initial levelling through finishing. The smooth tapered tip improves patient comfort during intraoral manipulation and reduces the chance of the tip dragging on soft tissue as the instrument is positioned behind the last bracket. The cutter also trims flush to the distal of the buccal tube, reducing the risk of crimping the tube entrance, a complication that prevents the next heavier archwire from being threaded through. Stainless steel, approximately 4.5″ in length, autoclavable.
